Slow mornings have a beautiful way of setting the pace for your day. When you wake up without rushing, suddenly the coffee is a little sweeter, the sun is a little brighter, and life itself seems like it’s on easy mode. I guess that’s why we often think it’s something unattainable for the average person. We get so caught up finishing tasks and rushing through our days that we forget to stop and smell the roses.
When I began my slow living journey, my main goal was, and still is, peace. I don’t have forever, and I don’t want to rush through the time I do have. So I developed a simple routine that helps me get things done while setting myself up for a calmer day. None of these habits take hours to complete. They’re simply little rituals that remind me to slow down before the busyness of the day begins.
Set a bedtime
Yes, a slow morning starts the night before. Set a bedtime so you get your full eight hours, and commit to it. Be in bed relaxing and drifting off to sleep no later than ten minutes after your scheduled bedtime. If you have an iPhone, you can even set up a sleep schedule that reminds you when it’s time to wind down.
I also like to make my bedroom feel as cozy as possible before I crawl into bed. Soft bedding, a warm blanket, and a calming pillow mist help signal to my brain that it’s time to rest instead of scrolling. Sometimes the environment is just as important as the habit itself.
Give yourself a few quiet minutes
When your alarm goes off, allow yourself a few minutes to simply be. Don’t check your phone. Don’t rush out of bed. This isn’t a marathon; it’s your day.
Take a deep breath, stretch your body, and check in with yourself before your feet even hit the floor. Those few quiet moments can make all the difference.
Open the windows
One of the first things I do each morning is open the blinds. Sunlight has a beautiful way of making a home feel alive. It wakes up both your mind and your space, reminding you that a brand-new day is waiting outside.
I love standing by the window with my morning drink for a few minutes and simply taking it all in. The trees swaying in the breeze, the birds singing, the warmth of the sunlight- it reminds me that life is happening all around me, not just inside my to-do list.
If you’re anything like me, decorating this little space can make it even more inviting. A crystal sun catcher, a small plant, or a beautiful set of sheer curtains can transform an ordinary window into your favorite corner of the house.
Enjoy a morning drink
Whether it’s coffee, tea, water, or a green drink, having something warm or refreshing to sip while your morning unfolds helps ease you into the day instead of throwing yourself into it.
I love reaching for a handmade ceramic mug that makes my coffee feel a little more special. It’s such a small detail, but little moments like that are what slow living is all about. We don’t need extravagant routines to romanticize our lives. Sometimes all it takes is enjoying our favorite drink from a mug we genuinely love.
Have one non-negotiable ritual
Every slow morning should have one habit that grounds you.
Mine is morning journaling.
If I don’t do a quick brain dump, my mind races all day with errands, grocery lists, appointments, blog ideas, and random thoughts. Taking five minutes to write everything down clears the mental clutter so I can actually focus on what matters.
I also keep one journal that’s dedicated solely to my morning thoughts, something like this. Having a notebook and pen I genuinely enjoy using makes me look forward to sitting down each morning.
And that’s it.
A slow morning doesn’t have to start at five o’clock or last three hours. It doesn’t have to look like the routines you see online. Even fifteen intentional minutes can completely change how the rest of your day feels.
Start with one ritual, build from there, and create a morning that feels peaceful to you. After all, it’s your morning, and you deserve to enjoy it.
