We all have those days when we feel out of sorts, down, or just plain off. It sneaks up on you when you least expect it—a restless night, a work situation, or even just a heavy feeling that doesn’t seem to have an explanation. Trust me, I’ve been there. When the weight of the day becomes too much, self-care is the one thing I can rely on to get me through.
Recognize the Feeling
The first step in self-care is recognizing that you’re not feeling your best and giving yourself permission to honor that. I used to ignore the heaviness I felt, thinking I could just push through it. But over time, I realized that brushing off those emotions just made them linger longer. Instead, I’ve learned to pause. I tell myself, “Okay, something’s off, and that’s okay.”
Take a moment to check in with yourself. Where is that feeling coming from? Did something specific happen, or is it just one of those days? You don’t have to have all the answers, but acknowledging the feeling is key to understanding what you need in that moment.
Slow Down and Breathe
When I’m overwhelmed, my thoughts race, and everything feels urgent. It’s like the world is moving too fast, and I can’t keep up. This is when I turn to something simple: my breath. I like to close my eyes, place one hand on my chest, and take a few deep breaths. Inhale for four seconds, hold for four, and exhale for four. I repeat this until I feel the tension in my body start to ease.
Breathing grounds me, especially when I feel like I’m spiraling. It’s amazing how something so simple can bring you back to the present.
Create a Cozy Corner
My home is my sanctuary, and when I’m feeling off, I lean into that even more. One of the first things I do is create a space where I feel safe and comfortable. I have this cozy little nook in my living room where I can curl up with my blanket and my puppy by my side. Lighting a candle or turning on some soft music instantly transforms the vibe, reminding me that this space is mine—my sacred haven where I can retreat from the outside world.
On especially tough days, I’ve found that slipping into my most comfortable clothes, brewing a cup of herbal tea, and wrapping myself in a blanket does wonders. It’s about creating that warm, comforting atmosphere where I can just be.
Get Outside for a Moment
As much as I love the comfort of home, sometimes I need a change of scenery. Nature has a way of grounding me when I’m feeling lost. Even a short walk with my dog helps me clear my mind. There’s something healing about the simplicity of the outdoors—the rustling leaves, the birds chirping, the feel of the breeze on my skin. It reminds me that there’s a world bigger than my current struggles.
If you’re feeling stuck inside your own head, stepping outside can offer a fresh perspective. Even if it’s just for ten minutes, the act of moving your body and being in a different environment can make a difference.
Nourish Yourself
When I’m down, I tend to forget to take care of the basics, like eating. I’m not a big fan of breakfast, and sometimes when the day goes sideways, I find myself skipping meals entirely. But that only makes things worse. If you’re like me, keeping it simple is key. On days when I can’t muster the energy to cook, I reach for something easy and nourishing—like a sweet potato or a bowl of oatmeal. Something warm and comforting that doesn’t require a lot of effort.
Taking care of your body is a crucial part of self-care, especially when your mind is feeling heavy. Give yourself permission to fuel up, even if it’s something small.
Let the Emotions Out
There are moments when no amount of breathing or walking will ease what I’m feeling. That’s when I turn to journaling. I grab a notebook and let the words flow. Sometimes it’s just a stream of consciousness—a way to get the swirling thoughts out of my head and onto paper. Other times, it’s a deeper reflection on what’s been weighing on me.
I’m a firm believer in expressing emotions rather than bottling them up. Whether it’s through writing, talking to a friend, or even crying it out, letting those feelings have an outlet is a form of release. For me, journaling is like having a conversation with myself, and it often helps me make sense of what I’m feeling.
Practice Small Acts of Kindness
Finally, one of the best forms of self-care I’ve learned is to be kind to myself. That might look like taking an extra-long shower, doing a face mask, or simply taking a break from whatever tasks I’ve been putting pressure on myself to complete. When I’m feeling down, it’s easy to be hard on myself for not being as productive or focused as I want to be. But self-care means understanding that it’s okay to take a step back and just rest.
Small acts of kindness, like giving myself permission to slow down or indulge in something that makes me feel good, have helped me recover from tough days. It’s not about fixing the problem immediately—it’s about creating a little space for healing.
Self-care isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, and what works one day might not work the next. But I’ve found that by tuning in to what my body and mind need in the moment, I’m able to shift out of that “off” feeling a little more gently. The next time you’re feeling down, try one or more of these practices and see how they resonate with you.
Take care of yourself, always. You’re worth it. 💜
