You know something that irked me when I started my bohemian journey. Everything was linked to boho. When to me they are not the same although they are similar they are different at their core. Like the difference between perfume and perfume while they might be used interchangeably, they are two different things. When you think of boho you think of brown, white, something a kin to minimalist style but very expensive yet mass marketed.
When bohemian comes into play to me it’s more of a lifestyle a way of living and it almost laughs at the notion it can be bottled up, marketed and bought off the shelves of target. Bohemianism the bohemian lifestyle is something you embody. It’s your essence, whether you travel all over the world or never left your backyard. You can be a bohemian because it’s a way of being not a trend.
Bohemianism to me is simply put living your life with creative intention. It’s living a life of passion on your own terms. It has a bit of eclecticism to it because it’s so loud in your face yet subtle depending on who you’re talking to. It’s subtle because those who embody it aren’t trying to be bohemians they just are. They don’t see their lives as a check box or an a plus b formula. It’s an art project, a story to be told and tapestry to be woven. It’s a beautiful story and when you see someone who is bohemian and boho you see the difference.
So let’s get into it. What is boho? When I think of boho I think of the Olsen twins. You remember early in the 2000s with the big boho bags the large glasses flowy fabrics and headbands on our foreheads. Then go into 2010 with the wide brim hats and Coachella fashion alà Vanessa Hudges. While I use these celebrities please remember I don’t know them.
They could be embodiment the Bohemian lifestyle. But the focus I want you to have is that boho look is marketing its very commercial very cookie cutter to the point we can narrow it down to a time point. Because it’s not a lifestyle it’s a fashion, it’s a style. And while bohemianism does have a look typically bohemians have a personal style. Whether it’s beatnik hippie or art deco and everything in between. It can not be defined by an era or singular person because it’s not a commercial style, it’s not a trend or a signature but something unique to each individual who identifies as a bohemian. Although when you see it, it’s undeniable.
This isn’t to say it’s a bad thing to be boho boho is still a very unique style and I’m so happy there’s any people who it segonated with so many people so much that it defined an entire generation. But there’s power in words they hold a great weight and while it’s not the end of the world if someone says I’m so boho I can’t help but picture the hyper commercialize mainstream it’s just not my actual vibe. But it’s all in love.
Do you identify as boho or bohemian or are you just vibing? Does it bother you or at the end of the it is what it is? Sound off in the comments.
With love & moonlight,
Vintessa
