Luteal Phase Rituals: Nurturing Yourself Before Your Period

You know that feeling when everything suddenly feels a little… off? One moment you’re craving quiet and solitude, and the next you’re tearing up over a cute dog video. Your skin feels more sensitive, your energy starts to dip, and even the smallest things seem a little louder than usual.

Welcome to your luteal phase, the week or two before your period when your body naturally begins turning inward. It’s a time that invites you to slow down, soften, and give yourself a little more care.

Instead of fighting against the changes or forcing yourself to keep going at the same pace, this is your opportunity to listen. Your body is asking for rest, nourishment, reflection, and a little extra love.

Here are seven simple luteal phase rituals to help you move through this season with more grace, ease, and intention.

7 Luteal Phase Rituals

1. Feed Your Body Like a Goddess

During your luteal phase, your body is working hard behind the scenes. It’s asking you to be gentle with her.  This is not the time to restrict, skip meals, or ignore your hunger. Your body needs support and fuel.

Try incorporating more:

Magnesium-rich foods like dark chocolate, spinach, and pumpkin seeds to support relaxation and ease tension.

Healthy fats from avocados, nuts, and olive oil to nourish your body and support hormone health.

Slow-burning carbohydrates like roasted sweet potatoes, lentils, and quinoa to help maintain steady energy.

Iron-rich foods like leafy greens, beans, and quality sources of red meat to help replenish your body.

One of my favorite luteal phase meals is a big cozy bowl of roasted sweet potatoes with a tahini drizzle, garlicky sautéed greens, and a sprinkle of hemp seeds. It’s comforting and filled with everything my body is craving during this phase.

2. Move Like Water, Not Fire

The luteal phase is not about pushing harder. It’s a time to embrace movement that feels supportive rather than exhausting.

Instead of forcing intense workouts, try:

  • Yin yoga to release tension and reconnect with your breath.
  • Gentle stretching to open your hips and relax your lower back.
  • A slow walk outside to clear your mind and calm your nervous system.

Release the pressure to perform. Your body does not need punishment. It needs movement that feels gentle and awakens the beauty within her.

3. Create a Tea Ritual

There is something so comforting about wrapping your hands around a warm cup of tea. It feels like a small moment of care, almost like a hug from the inside out.

Herbal teas can be a beautiful addition to your luteal phase rituals. Try brewing:

  • Raspberry leaf tea to support your body and prepare for menstruation.
  • Chamomile and lemon balm to encourage relaxation and calm.
  • Dandelion root tea to support digestion and help with bloating.

Take a few quiet moments to breathe, hold your cup in both hands, and allow yourself to be. This is your time.

4. Let Your Creativity Flow

The luteal phase is often a time when emotions and intuition feel stronger. Don’t push those feelings away; give them somewhere to go.

Try:

  • Journaling your thoughts, frustrations, dreams, or gratitude.
  • Painting or creating a collage without worrying about perfection.
  • Writing poetry, stories, or anything that helps you express what’s moving through you.

5. Pamper Yourself

Your body and skin may feel a little more sensitive during this phase, making it the perfect time to lean into rituals that feel comforting and nurturing.

  • A warm oil massage, like abhyanga, with coconut or sesame oil to help you feel grounded.
  • A hydrating face mask made with ingredients like honey, yogurt, and a touch of turmeric. I love this one by I’m From, it’s gentle and feels like a little midweek pick-me-up.
  • A long bath with Epsom salts to relax your muscles and release tension.

This is not the time to overthink self-care; this is your time to fully invest and be gentle with yourself.

6. Set Boundaries and Protect Your Energy

If you notice yourself craving more alone time or feeling a little more sensitive, honor that. You do not have to be available and “on” all the time.

Give yourself permission to:

  • Say no to plans that do not feel aligned.
  • Spend less time scrolling and pick up, or listen to a book to decompress and spend time off your phone (here are some books I love)
  • Create more quiet moments without feeling guilty.

Your energy naturally shifts during this phase. Allow yourself to turn inward.

7. Prepare for Your New Cycle

The luteal phase is a natural time of reflection and release. It’s a beautiful opportunity to clear space physically, emotionally, and spiritually before entering a new cycle.

You can honor this by:

  • Cleansing your space with incense, opening your windows, or simply refreshing your surroundings.
  • Decluttering something small, whether it’s a drawer, your inbox, or even lingering thoughts.
  • Setting an intention for the next cycle. What are you ready to welcome? What are you ready to release? Write it in your journal.

These small acts of preparation can help you move into your period feeling more supported and connected.

We tend to think we have to push through and endure during this time, but we don’t. You’re allowed to slow down and be gentle with your body. Adding even one of these luteal phase rituals can give your body the care she needs to move through this phase without overhauling your life. Remember you deserve grace always, so give yourself the grace and love you need.
