After a long day or week, my mind races with countless thoughts. I wonder if I finished everything I needed to do or replay moments of social interaction, overanalyzing them until I convince myself I must have messed something up. It’s exhausting. But when I come home, I don’t want to carry that energy with me—my home is my sanctuary, a space meant for peace. Yet, sometimes, I’m not done processing everything. My brain won’t let go until I’ve sorted through the noise.
When that happens, I turn to my grounding ritual. It’s a practice I’ve created to help me reset, release stress, and be more present in the moment. Over time, this ritual has become an essential part of my routine, allowing me to let go of the day’s chaos and return to a state of calm.
My Evening Reset
The first step of my grounding ritual begins the moment I walk through the door—my pup greets me, his whole body wiggling with excitement (and urgency, because he really needs to pee). Our evening walks are one of my favorite moments of the day. The sun is setting, most people are home for dinner, and it’s just me, my pup, and the trees. If my mind is still buzzing with lingering thoughts, I let them out here. But as I watch the last squirrels rustling home and take in my quiet surroundings, I start to feel more present.
The Grounding Ritual
Once I get home, my mind is usually settled, ready to transition into relaxation. After feeding my pup, I head to the bathroom to remove my makeup and take a quick shower. This marks the official end of my day. There’s nothing left to do, nowhere I need to be—I am home. The warm water washes away any lingering tension, signaling that it’s time to unwind.
Dressed in my comfiest clothes, I move to the living room and light sage and lavender. As the scent fills the space, I set my intention: “I release this energy, and my space is mine.” If it’s been an especially tough week, I take a few moments to journal, getting my thoughts out on paper to clear my mind.
Next, I make a cup of peppermint tea to further ground myself, its warmth settling both my nerves and my stomach. I curl up on the couch with my pup, turn on a comfort show, and let the stillness of the moment sink in. The energy in my space shifts—everything feels calm, exactly as it should be.
This grounding ritual reminds me that no matter what happens out there, I always have this: a place to return to, a moment to breathe, and the ability to let go. Over time, I’ve realized that peace isn’t something I have to chase—it’s something I can create.
There will always be days when my mind spirals, when I overanalyze every conversation or feel the weight of unfinished tasks. But this ritual brings me back. It reminds me that I am more than my anxieties, that I don’t have to carry every burden the world hands me. Each evening, as I sip my tea and let the stillness settle in, I reclaim my space, my energy, and my sense of self.
Grounding looks different for everyone, but for me, it’s about finding small rituals that bring me home to myself.
With love & moonlight,
