Thrifting is such a fun experience. The thrill of the hunt, the high of discovering a gem, and the excitement of styling it in your home—it’s a whole flurry of emotion. Each piece gets a second life, another chance to bring joy.
But I’m always a little leery of taking used items home. These items lived in situations we’ll never fully know. They may have absorbed emotions, energy, or even pain. We have to be mindful of what we welcome into our space. After all, we’ve worked hard to cultivate peace. Nothing is worth disrupting that.
That’s why I take the extra step to ensure the energy is clear.
Step One: Tune In Before You Buy
If you’re in the shop and you can lay hands on the item, do so. Pause. See what energy it gives off. Some people can glance at an object and feel its frequency, but even gently running your fingers across its surface can tell you a lot.
If the energy feels heavy, uneasy, or just… off, leave it. Your peace is priceless.
If you’re buying online, check the seller’s reviews and don’t be afraid to reach out. You can learn a lot from how they respond and what their space looks like in the background of their photos. If everything checks out, meet in a public place. And if the vibe is off when you get there—walk away.
This is your money, your space, your energy. You don’t owe anyone an exchange if it doesn’t feel right.
Step Two: Cleanse the Object
Once the item’s home, it’s time to cleanse—physically and energetically.
I wash away the dirt, stains, scuffs, and remnants of the past. I use traditional soap and water, but before I begin, I bless the water. I ask that it not only clean but purify. I make sure to get into every nook and cranny, letting my hands speak intention into the object.
When I’m done, I leave it outside on my balcony to air dry. The wind is part of the ritual—it carries away anything lingering that isn’t welcome. I never leave it out overnight, though; I don’t want critters hitching a ride.
Step Three: Invite the Item Into Its New Life
Once dry, I bring the piece inside and welcome it into its new home. I speak to it softly, letting it know it’s safe now. Then, I place crystals around or on it—usually selenite, rose quartz, or black onyx. Each has its own vibration: cleansing, love, protection. The ones I choose depend on what the item needs and what the space calls for.
For example, my new thrifted bistro set was a perfect find. The moment I laid eyes on it, I knew it had so much potential to elevate the energy in my space. After bringing it home, I went through the ritual, ensuring it was filled with the right energy before setting it in its new spot on the balcony, where it now brings such a peaceful vibe to my mornings.
Step Four: Fill the Space with Light
To seal the energy, I light incense. I let the smoke weave through the air, filling the space with warmth, light, and love. It’s my way of saying, “You belong here now. This is a home of peace.”
Each thrifted item is more than just decor—it’s a story, a second chance, a small reclamation of beauty. And with intention, we can make sure it brings only good things with it.
With love & moonlight,
Vintessa
