How to Decorate Your Apartment for the Holidays When Living Alone

When it comes to the holidays, I always feel like it’s difficult when you live alone. When I got my first place by myself, I didn’t know what to do. Should I decorate? Where will the tree go? Is it worth it?

Yes, it’s always worth it to decorate, even if it’s just you alone. The holiday season is for everyone, and you can still enjoy it. It’ll just look different than if you were decorating for a party or a family of five.

Think grown and sexy Christmas, with The Temptations playing in the background. Less Hallmark Christmas. I have a method to my solo girl Christmas, and here’s how I decorate for the holidays without feeling overwhelmed or running out of storage.

Paper Trees Instead of One Big Tree

I always struggle with decorating because, as someone who lives alone in a one-bedroom apartment, having a large Christmas tree with all the trimmings can be too much. But I want a tree, so instead of one, I got multiple paper trees.

Paper trees are easy, less overwhelming, and still give the spirit of a big one. I don’t usually get a full-sized tree because I’m not carrying it up multiple flights of stairs or figuring out where to store it. Instead, I place multiple trees along a shelf and put any gifts I have underneath.

I love the ones with glitter because they sparkle in the light and add a bit of whimsy. I use several in various sizes and colors to create the look of a miniature forest. The ones I love are from Etsy because they have the perfect amount of glitter and come in different sizes. You can find these paper trees here if you want to create a similar look. I also add some simple matte ones to create dimension and a focal point.

Christmas Blankets That Complement Your Home

I also love adding Christmas blankets. I keep multiple throws around my living room, and I replace them with holiday-themed ones during this time of year. Nothing too overwhelming or in your face something like a simple emerald green throw or a cream one with a lovely holiday motif like this one, to add to the Christmas spirit without doing too much.

When the season is over, they’re easy to tuck away in a storage box or a trunk. I like adding to my blanket collection with subtle seasonal touches instead of overhauling my entire space. That way, it still feels like my home, not a Hallmark movie.

The blankets complement the understated tree display instead of fighting for attention. The room still feels like it exists beyond the holidays, so I won’t get tired of the decor the following year.

A Whimsical Holiday Wreath

Adding a simple holiday wreath like this to your front door brings the holiday theme outside and is a classic Christmas tradition. I think this should be the one piece that has the most whimsy out of everything.

A wreath brings the holiday spirit to your doorstep and sets the tone for the rest of the home. An otherwise simple wreath with a slightly oversized red velvet bow gives the door some visual weight and makes an impact. I also like adding a light dusting of faux snow to the top of the wreath to make it look like we’ve had a little snowfall, despite living in an area where snow rarely happens.

Tapered Candles and a Little Christmas Nostalgia

To finish the room, you can add tapered candles in various holiday colors on gold or matte black candleholders similar to these, depending on the tone of your space. They add a calming glow that lets the decorations speak for themselves while enveloping you in the spirit of Christmas.

Having a candle that smells like Christmas pine adds to the mood. I like using a candle instead of relying solely on a diffuser or room spray because lighting a candle gives me a reason to pause and enjoy the atmosphere. It’s a small moment that helps set the tone for the holidays instead of letting the season pass by in the background.

Personal Photos and Winter Scenes

The final touch for the holidays is the photos. I like keeping duplicate prints of my personal photos so I can keep some in my photo album and display others depending on the occasion.

I take photos of family and friends and place them where my eyes naturally land, like on the side table, on various shelves, and near my decorations. I also keep atmospheric and landscape photos on my walls to bring winter indoors and make my home feel a little more like a holiday in the snow.

Creating Your Own Christmas Traditions

The holidays are the perfect time to refresh your space and set the mood, whether you’re celebrating by yourself or hosting others. You deserve to enjoy the holidays even if you’re living in an apartment.

It’s the perfect time to light a good candle, cozy up under a Christmas blanket, enjoy your trees, and create your own traditions.

My favorite part of these decorations is that once the holidays are over, I can easily fold away the trees, tie up the wreath, and put the blankets and photos away. The magic doesn’t have to disappear just because the season has ended. Everything gets tucked into a small cabinet or storage box for next year.

When I bring out my regular decor, it’s still my home, just without the Christmas touches. Easy, simple, and not a lot of clutter. Perfect.
