Making Your Apartment A Bohemian Sanctuary: Kitchen Edition

As the old saying goes, the kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s where memories happen, relationships are formed, and where we nourish and honor our bodies. Yet somehow, it’s often the most neglected space. Most people don’t really cook; most of the time we don’t have time, and with the convenience of food apps it can be easier to eat out.

For myself, I never really used my kitchen prior to a few years ago. I got tired of waiting hours for food and blowing my budget on meals that honestly started tasting all the same. After years of trial and error, I’ve found that my kitchen has become one of my favorite places in my space. It’s where I create, learn new things, and expand my knowledge.

It has become a sanctuary within a sanctuary, a place where I go barefoot, make fresh bread, create meals with love, and curate a space where I can feel at ease and welcomed. A feeling I didn’t always have in the kitchen.

I wanted to feel inspired when I came into my kitchen. Like walking into a peaceful kitchen from a forgotten time. not sterilized and modern. a place where you go to eat something savory, sway your hips when you’re cooking, and drink wine while you hope your bread comes out well. A place to land and create.

Something I did to create a warmer feeling was softer lighting. I added lights under my cabinets to create a warm glow throughout the cooking space. This softens the area so cooking something new doesn’t feel as intimidating. It also helps after a long day, creating a relaxing atmosphere so it doesn’t feel so heavy in the evenings.

I also store my dry goods that I use regularly out on the counter. There’s something old-world about having dry goods and preserved foods sitting out, waiting for their turn. I don’t use anything overly fancy, just classic glass jars with gold lids. It ties everything together and keeps the look cohesive.

A large rug in the center of the kitchen adds warmth and comfort, allowing me to live my best Barefoot Contessa life. Lastly, my wooden cutting boards and cooking utensils deepen that feeling of warmth. Making it feel as if I’m a true cook, curating something amazing to serve.

The kitchen has become such a sacred space with these small touches, making cooking feel like a ritual. I turn on the low lights, play soft music, and begin preparing a simple meal or trying a new recipe. The kitchen is what truly makes a home a sanctuary.

With love & moonlight,
