I’ve been falling in love with roses lately. I’ve always loved flowers in general, but there’s something about roses that makes them feel like the epitome of femininity. With their endless variety and resilience to grow in almost any condition, they prove that beauty comes from strength and endurance—not just softness.
Recently, I got a bouquet of roses and wished I could keep them forever! I wanted to harness their beauty, and after a little research, I found three amazing ways to reuse rose petals and make them last. If you love roses as much as I do, here’s how you can turn them into something beautiful and long-lasting.
1. Rose Water – A Simple & Luxurious DIY
One of the most popular ways to use roses is by making rose water. This quick and easy DIY takes just 10 minutes and can be used as a facial toner, hair mist, or linen/room spray. I prefer to use it for my hair to help with frizz and sometimes as a face mist throughout the day.
How to Make Rose Water
Ingredients:
- ½ to 1 cup of fresh or dried rose petals (I used about 2 flowers)
- 2-3 cups of filtered or distilled water
Instructions:
- Place the rose petals in a pot.
- Pour in just enough filtered water to cover them.
- Simmer on low heat for 30-45 minutes, making sure the water doesn’t boil.
- Once the water is light pink and fragrant, strain out the petals.
- Store in a glass jar or spray bottle.
- Optional: Add witch hazel to help it last longer.
2. Rose Tea – A Cozy & Skin-Loving Drink
If you love tea, you need to try rose tea. Not only does it taste amazing, but it’s also anti-inflammatory, rich in antioxidants, and great for digestion and hydration.
How to Make Rose Tea
Ingredients:
- 1-2 teaspoons of dried rose petals (or 3-4 fresh petals)
- 1 cup of hot water (about 190°F, just before boiling)
Instructions:
- If using fresh petals, rinse them well to remove any pesticides or dirt.
- Heat water to 190°F, just before boiling.
- Add rose petals to a cup or teapot.
- Pour hot water over them and cover the cup.
- Let steep for 5-10 minutes, depending on how strong you want it.
- Strain and serve! Add honey, cinnamon, or lemon for extra flavor.
Tip: Try adding rose petals to green tea, chamomile, or hibiscus for a twist!
3. Rose Oil – A Decadent DIY for Skin & Hair
There’s something about using rose oil that makes me feel so luxurious. It’s deeply moisturizing, gives skin a natural glow, and smells divine.
Since fresh petals contain moisture, dried rose petals are best to prevent mold. If you prefer fresh, let them wilt slightly before use.
How to Make Rose Oil (Infusion Method)
Ingredients:
- 1 cup dried rose petals (or slightly wilted fresh petals)
- 1 cup carrier oil (jojoba for lightweight moisture, olive oil for deep hydration)
Instructions:
- Place rose petals in a clean glass jar.
- Pour carrier oil over the petals, ensuring they are fully submerged.
- Close the jar and shake gently.
- Let sit in a warm, sunny spot for 2-4 weeks, shaking gently daily.
- Strain using a cheesecloth or fine-mesh strainer, squeezing out as much oil as possible.
- Store in a dark glass bottle in a cool, dry place to extend shelf life.
Quick Method: Heat Infusion (Faster Option)
- Combine rose petals and oil in a heat-safe bowl.
- Place the bowl over a pot of simmering water (double boiler method).
- Heat gently for 2-3 hours, making sure the oil doesn’t overheat.
- Strain and store as usual.
If you’ve ever bought a bouquet and wished you could keep it forever, these DIY rose recipes are the perfect way to make that dream come true. Whether you’re making rose water, rose tea, or rose oil, you’ll be harnessing the beauty and benefits of roses long after they’ve bloomed.
